In Vivo to In Vitro Testing
Although HemoGenix® does not have facilities to perform preclinical animal studies, we do work with CROs to significantly extend the studies so that as much information is obtained from anaimal studies as possible.
It is often the case that results from animal studies were either unexpected or did not comply with results from previous stages of drug development. This can be due to the level of sensitivity used in animal studies or even the incorrect assays. Unexpected results might occur because an agent might act at a cellular level that might not be detectable using other assays. This is where in vitro assays come into play.
By sending organs or tissues to HemoGenix®, they can be prepared and setup in in vitro culture systems that would detect a response not detected by normal pharmacological tests. For example, morphology is limited by the identification of cell types. However, in vitro assays, such as stem cell assays, that rely of a functional response, can detect affects at a completely different cellular level that might explain the reason for any unexpected results.
It should also be noted that, at least for the hematopoietic system, there is an approximate 80% concordance between results obtained in vitro and those in vivo.
